IP68 Light Guide Overview

Electronic products are increasingly incorporating light into their design, for functional purposes and for aesthetic reasons. When used outdoors or when they come into contact with water or moisture in other ways, it’s essential that water is kept safely away from the product's electronics. To meet this growing need for waterproofing, MENTOR has developed a wide range of IP68-Rated Light Guides and Front Panels Lights. They are available ex-stock with low MOQs and short delivery times.

The IP68 Light Guides are very easy to assemble - they are simply pushed into a pre-drilled hole in the product housing. The light transmission faces of the light guides are positioned above or in front of the LEDs inside the housing, without contact.

There are over 50 new variants in the range. Head diameter options include 5.2mm and 3.2mm, as well as miniaturised versions with a head diameter of 2.2mm. Many different lengths are offered, between 4.5mm and 45mm. Three head shapes are available: spherical, planar and counterbore.

If a custom length is required, this can often be provided with minimal tool costs. Other variants such as coloured light guides are also possible as a customised solution.

Flexible light guide systems are an elegant and cost-effective solution for many opto-electric design challenges, such as those faced when redesigning a product in the middle of its life cycle. For the first time, waterproof solutions are now available for IP68 applications.

The flexible light guides are assembled by pushing them into a pre-drilled hole in the product housing. The light transmission faces of the light guides then clip onto the PCB TOPLEDs using push-fit pegs to keep them securely in place. The new IP68 flexible light guides are available as standard items in three different head shapes: spherical, planar and counterbore. The lens diameter is 5.2mm, available in three lengths: 50 mm, 80 mm and 150 mm.

The light guides use a very flexible 2000µm material providing an impressive bending radius of up to R=20.

Custom lengths are available with minimal additional costs. Other custom options include coloured lenses.

If PCB-mounted LEDs are not suitable for the application, signal lamps from the MENTOR 2660 series are a cost-effective solution. The use of robust and UV-stable materials make them suitable for outside use. The design incorporates flexible seals and the fully-encapsulated PCB enables them to meet waterproof protection class IP68.

The combination of an SMD-LED with a light guide within the lamps provides a very high level of ESD protection for the housing front. The signal lamps have a robust plastic housing with a cover diameter of 10 mm, optionally available in black or metallic look. The lens diameters are 3mm and 5mm. The lamps are equipped with low current LEDs in white or RGB and have a wire connection or a plug connector.

Customised versions are easy to achieve, thanks to the modular design. For example, the SMD-LED can be changed. Single-colour, special colours or duo LED, IR oandnight vision are all possible.

The signal lamps can be equipped with I²C controllers, series resistors or an alternative electrical connection. As a rule, these customised versions do not incur additional tool costs. Coloured lenses or special lens shapes are also possible, as are alternative housing colours or different cover shapes and sizes.
