Welcome to Multitron's blog. Here, I shall be regularly adding updates about the latest projects that MENTOR and Multitron are assisting customers with, as well as relevant company developments. I hope it paints a picture of what our company is all about: assisting Design Engineers to exploit MENTOR's diverse range of standard electronic components and custom solutions in order to achieve design and budget goals, and then reliably supplying the manufactured components.

Multitron’s MD Duncan Grove will be in daily attendance on MENTOR’s Stand 255 in Hall B5 at Electronica 2016. He will be able to introduce you to the most relevant MENTOR electronic and opto engineers who can provide invaluable specialist advice for your latest design projects. Incredibly, MENTOR’s stand (always massive) will be 15% larger […]
Multitron’s new base is the ground floor of the converted Gothic mansion shown above. Despite the rural-looking setting, Multitron is still based in Wimbledon Village, south west London, just 15 minutes from the city centre. Our new location makes us immediate neighbours of The All England Lawn Tennis Club, home of the world-renowned Wimbledon Championships, […]
Still our favourite Exhibition, we’re immensely looking forward to the Electronics Design Show, where you will find myself and a Senior MENTOR Engineer on our Multitron stand. On a bigger stand this year – Stand L30 in the Ricoh Arena, Coventry – we’ll be easy to find, “chewing the fat” with lots of Design Engineer […]
New light guide / light pipe microsite
The web’s most comprehensive resource for specialist engineers!
Finding the ideal light guide and understanding all the options available has just got a whole lot easier for Design Engineers with the launch of Multitron’s new Light Guide Microsite. This is carefully designed to help Engineers easily navigate to the optimum Light Guide solution for their application. The MENTOR range of standard Light Guides […]
MENTOR’s launch of their M-CUT 2-D Custom Light Guide / Light Pipe system was without a doubt the biggest cause of all the buzz on their massive Electronica 2014 stand in November. This innovation opens-up a whole new world to electronic design engineers who do not have the tooling budgets or volumes to justify custom light […]
With its near 100-year heritage as a leading electronic component manufacturer, MENTOR must be one of the longest-standing exhibitors at Electronica. I was again in attendance in a support role during 2014 and for sure left Munich enthused about the exciting new MENTOR product introductions that Multitron now has available to offer its UK customers […]
Square Light Guides / Light Pipes are an innovative new introduction from MENTOR. I like them because they not only look great but allow you to visibly differentiate your product designs from the more mundane. It is worth noting that whilst the 10-column array versions have multiple tiny light elements closely spaced together, MENTOR’s clever integrated diaphragm prevents […]
MENTOR adds multi-element arrays to its new range of rear-mounted front panel Light Guides / Light Pipes
Despite only have launched their innovative new range of rear-mounted single front panel light guides / light pipes last March, these have already generated such a high level of interest that MENTOR have added multiple array versions to the range. Certainly, all of the engineers I have shown rear-mounted samples to were very impressed. OK, […]
MENTOR’s Electronica 2014 stand features 17 large-format, fine-art photographic prints commissioned from Duncan Grove FRPS (MULTITRON’S MD!).
MENTOR’s Marketing & Communication Manager Mr Stephan Sost comments:- “MENTOR manufactures high-quality standard and custom precision opto, electronic and mechanical components; we tend to present these to Design Engineers in an efficient, engineering-focused manner. The fact is that the design and high quality finish of our components results in them really making a difference to the […]
Throughout Electronica, Multitron will be in attendance on MENTOR’s very substantial and impressive Stand 255 in Hall B5. Allow us introduce you to the most relevant of MENTOR’s many talented electronic and opto engineers who can give you practical, non-biased advice on your own current design project. Also, be amongst the first to learn about […]
This is our favourite Exhibition – lots of Design Engineer visitors with whom to “chew the fat”! It is our opportunity to explain the many electronic design solutions within our arsenal that are not always searchable via Google. Join us for a coffee and a chat at the Show. See many working examples of the […]
MENTOR R&D Development – Corona & Contour / Rim Lighting light guides. An opportunity to work alongside MENTOR.
Intriguing additions to MENTOR’s light guide range offering illuminated BNC and test jack connectors or illuminated keyholes. How does MENTOR deliver the light to a keyhole on a door that opens and shuts? Contact Multitron to find out!
This new collection of rear-mounted light guides is an addition to MENTOR’s hugely popular range of panel-mounted light guides. Conventional front-mounted light guides will by definition always have heads slightly larger than the enclosure’s hole, which results in not all of the head being directly illuminated by the LED. The advantage of mounting from the rear […]
MENTOR had a busy time at last week’s Light+Building exhibition in Frankfurt and I was there to support during the first two days of the show. As well as the normal day-to-day enquiries for the very broad range of MENTOR products and services, there was particular interest in three specific areas:- MENTOR’s demo area that […]
MENTOR will again be exhibiting at Frankfurt’s International Light & Building Exhibition 30 March to 4 April 2014. Do visit their stand G20 in Hall 4 to learn more about MENTOR’s unique competencies in the management of light. This will be your opportunity to speak directly with
During my recent factory visit I explained to MENTOR that Multitron’s UK Design Engineers were loving the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of MENTOR’s illuminated switch cap solutions but many were asking for round / circular versions rather than square. I quite reasonably berated MENTOR for their short-sightedness in not supplying these. You know those looks you […]
I thought it worth reminding you about MENTOR’s 150mm long Ø3mm flexible light guide, since it always generates so much interest whenever I show a working demo to Design Engineers. Some see it as a useful workaround that could “get them out of a hole” when redesigning a product mid-life-cycle. Others view it as an elegant […]
It was a bit of a strange Southern Manufacturing and Electronics Exhibition this year! Multitron were there supporting our sub-distributors Diamond and Foremost but on the first day it was a very frightening experience. The exhibition is held in a truly massive marquee construction (seems to be the size of Earls Court 2) and I […]
I have just returned from a visit to MENTOR’s Erkrath (near Dusseldorf) HQ and as always I left feeling enthused and genuinely proud to be associated with such a fine company. A superficial observation perhaps but wherever I went I saw smart, clean, modern and tidy Design and Admin offices, nothing ostentatious but clearly well-invested. […]
Moog GmbH manufactures servo controllers that really do need to be waterproof! We have just received this image showing a unit that has already been in use for a year underwater. Moog relies on the quality of MENTOR’s IP 68-rated 1282.# series light guides. You can too. See all the details by downloading a pdf […]
During the week 9-16 November 2013, the Dutch city of Eindhoven will for the eighth consecutive year become a showcase of interventions, installations, performances and events based on the phenomena of artificial light. An installation comprising of 1,001 individual high brightness RGB LED-powered MENTOR M-Tubes will be one of the twelve key works of art. […]
October 2013 was Multitron’s busiest-ever month by some considerable margin – order intake was 70% higher than budget. Perhaps this means we are doing something right? Perhaps this means that everyone has ordered in October and we shall receive no orders in November?! MENTOR has long had a strong presence in the UK but too-often […]
Late yesterday afternoon (after MENTOR’s German factory had closed) Multitron received an urgent phone call from one of its major light guide customers. This company, a substantial OEM, purchases several different MENTOR light guides, many of them of custom design. They enquired about lead-time for one of their peripheral custom parts (for which they do […]
I recently visited a manufacturer of pedestrian gates used in high security office buildings. They were primarily interested in MENTOR M-Tubes (flexible and rigid tubular lights that deliver homogenous light along their length from just two RGB LEDs fitted either end). These they wanted to use for red and green indicator lights 1M in length, […]
Plastics News has today published an article reviewing MENTOR’s special expertise in the design and manufacture of LED optics and light guides. I found it a very interesting read and learned some things I should have known about but didn’t. OK, OK, I live a sad life and really should try to get out more! […]
Crane Merchandising Systems are one of (if not the) largest manufacturers of vending machines in the world. A couple of years ago they explained to me their design challenge to create an amber illuminated “halo” around a capacitive touch panel on a new coffee machine they had been commissioned to design and build by Autobar, […]
Multitron has just received its first order from a new Fire Protection customer for 12,000 pcs of a custom Light Guide. This part has been manufactured to a special length and has an unusual concave base designed by MENTOR. Because the design was based on a standard MENTOR part, tooling cost for these custom modifications […]
One of Multitron’s Pro-Audio customers has regularly purchased handle 3277.1803, a standard black-anodised handle with 180mm hole centres. They are introducing a new product that needs a matching handle but with 347mm hole centres, significantly larger than any of the variants in MENTOR’s standard range. Since their product is new they understandably have been reluctant […]
The nattily-named 1216.1013 MENTOR flexible light guide was missed off Farnell’s major expansion of MENTOR light guide listings this Spring. Rumour has it that this is because someone at Multitron (I honestly cannot say who but yes I do write the listings), mistyped the part number. Why MENTOR can’t give them names such as Mondeo […]
Multitron has announced the availability of a new range of MENTOR miniature light-guides with radiating surfaces of 2mm diameter and a grid dimension of 2.54mm. Compared with conventional 5.08mm grid light-guides, these new miniaturised versions allow twice the number of display elements within the same physical width. This offers design engineers a whole new range […]
On 2 & 3 October, the “MENTOR from Multitron” stand at the Electronics Design Show 2013 in Coventry was thronging with the type of people we like speaking with most – Electronic Design Engineers! During two hectic days we were able to enjoy dialogue with many Engineers and brief them on how MENTOR’s standard and […]
A Multitron customer, one of the world’s largest international Contract Electronics Manufacturers, has written to Multitron congratulating us on their 100% score for both timely delivery and quality. Whilst we at Multitron have “done our bit”, most of the credit must go to MENTOR. They are by far the most efficient, honourable and easy-to-work-with company […]
